What Is a White British Shorthair?

The white British Shorthair is one of the most visually dramatic cats in the breed. Its coat is a true, solid snow-white — no markings, no shading, no cream tint — paired with eyes that can be deep copper, brilliant sapphire blue, or the extraordinary odd-eyed combination of one of each. The contrast of a plush white coat against deep copper eyes is striking enough; against blue eyes it becomes something genuinely breathtaking.

White British Shorthairs carry the dominant white gene, which suppresses any underlying coat color. This means a white kitten could carry blue, chocolate, or lilac beneath the white — interesting for breeders, but invisible to the eye. What is visible is that pure, cloud-white coat and those remarkable eyes.

Eye Color Varieties in White British Shorthairs

White British Shorthairs come in three eye color categories, each with its own appeal. Copper-eyed whites are the most common and carry the warm, classic British Shorthair look. Blue-eyed whites are rarer and carry a small elevated risk of deafness linked to the white gene — at Mantra Cats, all blue-eyed white kittens are hearing-tested before adoption.
