What Is a Black British Shorthair?

The black British Shorthair is one of the most underrated colors in the breed. Its coat is a true, cool jet-black — solid from root to tip, with no brown cast, no rusty tones, and ideally no ghost tabby markings visible in sunlight. Combined with the plush, dense British Shorthair coat texture, a well-bred black British Shorthair has an almost velvet-like quality that is completely different from ordinary black domestic cats.

Deep copper or gold eyes complete the picture — that warm-toned eye against the cool black coat creates one of the strongest color contrasts in the breed. Black British Shorthairs are often described as the most "panther-like" cats in the British Shorthair color range.

What to Look For in a Quality Black British Shorthair

Coat quality matters enormously in black British Shorthairs. Low-quality lines can show ghost tabby markings — faint striping visible in sunlight — or a brownish cast that indicates diluted or poor black pigmentation.
