What Is a Chocolate British Shorthair?

The chocolate British Shorthair carries one of the most distinctive and visually striking coats in the breed. Its rich, warm-brown color — genuinely the shade of dark milk chocolate — is solid and even from root to tip, with the same dense, plush texture that makes the British Shorthair coat famous. Nose leather and paw pads are brown or a warm cinnamon-pink, and eyes are deep copper or orange — a combination that makes the chocolate British Shorthair genuinely unlike any other cat.

Chocolate is a recessive color in the British Shorthair, meaning both parents must carry the chocolate gene for any chocolate kittens to appear in a litter. This genetic requirement — combined with the difficulty of maintaining correct coat quality alongside the chocolate pigment — is why genuine, well-typed chocolate British Shorthairs are significantly rarer than blues and far harder to find from a quality breeder.

Chocolate vs. Black — What Is the Difference?

New buyers sometimes mistake very dark chocolate cats for black. The key difference is warmth: black British Shorthairs have a cool, jet-black coat with no brown cast, while chocolate cats have a distinctly warm brown tone that is especially visible in sunlight. The nose leather is the clearest indicator — black cats have black or dark gray nose leather, while chocolate cats have brown or cinnamon-pink. At Mantra Cats we can send you comparison photos on request.

Chocolate British Shorthairs at Mantra Cats

Our chocolate British Shorthairs are produced from our CFA and TICA Champion bloodline program. Our champion bloodline studs, are the genetic anchor of our breeding program, and his offspring — including our chocolate kittens — consistently display the correct coat density, body type, and temperament that define a quality British Shorthair.

We breed chocolate in both British Shorthair and British Longhair varieties. A chocolate British Longhair — that same rich brown coat in a flowing, semi-long format — is among the rarest and most requested cats we produce. All chocolate kittens are eligible for CFA or TICA registration and includes full pedigree documentation upon request.

Every kitten receives a full veterinary exam, FVRCP and FELV/FIV vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and a health guarantee before going to their new family. Lifetime breeder support is included.
