What Is a Calico British Shorthair?

The calico British Shorthair carries a tri-color coat of white, black, and red in clearly defined patches. Unlike tortoiseshell cats, where colors blend together, calico patterns are bolder and more graphic — distinct areas of each color create a patchwork effect that is immediately striking. The British Shorthair's dense, plush coat gives the calico pattern a crisp, almost painted quality that is especially beautiful.

Like tortoiseshells, calico cats are almost exclusively female due to the X-linked genetics of the red and black color expression. Every calico cat carries a completely unique pattern — the distribution of white, black, and red is random and individual to each kitten.
