What Is a British Longhair?

The British Longhair is the semi-longhaired variety of the British Shorthair. It shares every defining characteristic of the breed — the round face, large round eyes, cobby body, short thick neck, and calm, affectionate temperament — with the addition of a flowing, semi-long coat that adds a layer of visual drama without the high-maintenance grooming commitment of a Persian or Ragdoll.

British Longhairs are sometimes called the Highland British or Lowlander in certain European registries. In the United States they are recognized by TICA. They are far rarer than British Shorthairs in the US market, and finding a quality British Longhair from verified champion bloodlines is genuinely difficult.

British Longhair vs. British Shorthair — The Key Differences

The temperament and body type are identical — there is no personality difference between the two. The differences are purely physical: coat length and grooming requirement. The British Longhair coat is semi-long and flowing, particularly on the ruff around the neck, the tail, and the britches on the hind legs. It requires weekly brushing to prevent tangles and to reduce seasonal shedding. Beyond that, care is the same as for any British Shorthair.
