What Is an Odd-Eyed British Shorthair?

An odd-eyed British Shorthair has one brilliant sapphire blue eye and one deep copper or gold eye — a condition called complete heterochromia. It occurs naturally in white-coated cats carrying specific genetic combinations, and it is genuinely, unpredictably rare. You cannot guarantee odd-eyed kittens in a litter even when breeding two white cats — the combination of eye colors is determined by individual pigmentation development in each kitten.

The result is a cat that is literally unlike any other — each odd-eyed cat has a unique combination of eye depths and tones, and the asymmetry draws the eye immediately. In person, the effect is extraordinary in a way that photographs rarely capture fully.

How Rare Are Odd-Eyed British Shorthairs?

Odd-eyed kittens are not reliably produced in every white litter. Even in breeding programs specifically working with white British Shorthairs, odd-eyed kittens may appear in only some litters, and only as a portion of that litter's white kittens.
