What Is a Blue Tortie British Shorthair?

The blue tortie British Shorthair — also called blue cream — carries a soft, blended coat of blue-gray and cream. It is the diluted form of the classic tortoiseshell pattern: where a standard tortie has bold red and black patches, the blue tortie has pale cream and dove-gray, blended or patched together in a combination that is entirely individual to each cat.

No two blue tortie cats carry the same pattern. The distribution of blue and cream across the coat is random and unrepeatable, meaning every blue tortie kitten from Mantra Cats is genuinely one of a kind. This unpredictability is part of what makes the color so appealing to buyers who want something distinctive.

Why Are Blue Torties Almost Always Female?

The tortoiseshell gene is carried on the X chromosome. Because females have two X chromosomes, they can carry both a blue gene on one and a cream gene on the other — producing the blended coat. Males, with only one X chromosome, can only express one color, not both. The rare exceptions — male torties — are almost always sterile. For practical purposes, all blue tortie British Shorthair kittens at Mantra Cats are female.

Blue Tortie British Shorthairs at Mantra Cats

Our blue tortie British Shorthairs come from our Champion bloodline program and are eligible for CFA or TICA registration and includes full pedigree documentation upon request. Every kitten receives a full veterinary health exam, vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and a health guarantee. We also breed blue tortie British Longhairs — the blended blue-cream coat in a flowing, semi-long format — and they are among our most beautiful and distinctive cats.
