What Is a Red Mackerel Tabby British Shorthair?

The red mackerel tabby British Shorthair carries a bold, warm ginger-red coat marked with the mackerel tabby pattern — narrow, parallel stripes running vertically from the spine toward the belly, like a fish skeleton, which gives the mackerel pattern its name. The classic tabby M marking on the forehead is clearly present, and the base coat has a warm, rich orange-red tone that deepens toward the tabby markings.

The mackerel tabby is distinct from the classic tabby (which has bold swirls and a bulls-eye pattern on the flank) and is recognized separately by CFA and TICA. On a British Shorthair's plush, dense coat, the mackerel stripes have a particularly crisp and striking appearance — the coat's texture and density makes the pattern stand out more than it would on a short, fine-coated cat.

Red Mackerel Tabby vs. Classic Red Tabby

Buyers sometimes ask about the difference between mackerel and classic tabby. In the mackerel pattern, the stripes are narrow and run in parallel lines down the body. In the classic tabby, the stripes form bold swirls and a distinctive bulls-eye on the flank. Both are CFA-recognized patterns in British Shorthairs. If you are interested in a specific tabby pattern, contact us to discuss what is currently expected in upcoming litters.
