What Is a Lilac British Shorthair?

The lilac British Shorthair is the rarest of the four classic self colors — blue, black, chocolate, and lilac. Its distinctive dove-gray coat carries warm pink undertones that set it immediately apart from the cooler, neutral tone of blue. The nose leather and paw pads are a characteristic faded lilac-pink, and the eyes are deep copper or orange. In person, the lilac coat has an almost luminous quality that photographs struggle to capture.

Lilac is not a color that can be produced casually. It requires both the chocolate gene and the dilution gene to be inherited from both parents — meaning the breeding pair must each carry two copies of two separate recessive genes. This genetic requirement is why truly quality lilac British Shorthairs are hard to find, and why so few breeders produce them consistently.

Lilac vs. Blue — What Is the Difference?

At a glance, new buyers sometimes confuse lilac and blue. Side by side, the difference is clear: blue is a cool, neutral gray with no pink cast, while lilac is distinctly warmer — a dove-gray tinged with pink that makes the coat look almost lavender in certain light. The paw pads are the clearest tell: blue cats have slate-gray pads, while lilac cats have the characteristic faded lilac-pink pads that are unique to the color.

In terms of temperament, coat texture, and build, lilac British Shorthairs are identical to blues — the same plush, dense coat and the same calm, affectionate personality. The only difference is color genetics.

Lilac British Shorthairs at Mantra Cats

At Mantra Cats, we produce lilac BritiOur studs include lilac bicolor with blue eyes and solid lilac. These identical genetics are behind every lilac kitten we breed.

We breed lilac in both British Shorthair and British Longhair varieties. Lilac British Longhair kittens carry that same dove-pink coat in a flowing, semi-long coat — one of the most visually striking combinations in the entire cat world. Both varieties are eligible for CFA and TICA registered with full pedigree papers upon request.

Lilac kittens at Mantra Cats receive the same comprehensive health preparation as all our kittens: full veterinary exam, FVRCP and FELV/FIV vaccinations, deworming, and microchipping before going home. A health guarantee and lifetime breeder support are included with every adoption.

Lilac British Shorthair Kittens in Texas

We are based in Houston and place lilac British Shorthair kittens with families across Texas — Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, and beyond. Due to their rarity, lilac kittens typically reserve before being publicly listed. If you are interested in a lilac kitten, we strongly recommend joining our waitlist so you are first to know when a litter is expected.

We also deliver nationwide. If you are outside Texas and searching for a genuine lilac British Shorthair from a registered, championship-line cattery, Mantra Cats is one of the very few US breeders producing this color at this quality level.
